Tabacon Hot Springs, La Fortuna

#1 of 110 in Spas in Costa Rica
Must see · Hot Spring · Spa
Soak in the volcanic surroundings at Tabacon Hot Springs, a spa resort in the heart of Costa Rica's rainforest. The five-star complex provides luxurious and relaxing experiences in a natural setting, right at the base of a mighty volcano that destroyed a nearby village in the 1960s. Dormant for the last few decades, the volcano now provides a scenic backdrop for five different hot springs, with temperatures ranging between 25 C (77 F) and 50 C (122 F). Naturally heated by the volcanic soil, a thermal river flows through the resort and forms several small waterfalls and swimming pools. • I went back to Tabacon Hot Springs to see if it was still as beautiful as always. I was not disappointed. They have made significant improvements since my last visit and now the pools of water are...  more »
  • The service was mediocre. No social distancing at all, crowded everywhere, the showers were COLD- I caught a cold after i attended it. After being in the thermal waters, I needed to take a shower...  more »
  • The springs are nice, and the food was good. Once you pay the entrance fee, you can go pretty much where you want within the springs, which was nice. That being said, there were a couple of annoying things about the experience. First, parking is really chaotic. They have folks trying to direct traffic, but I ended up driving past the place and making a u-turn because I couldn't figure out where to go. Second, I felt like I got ripped off at the lunch. The lunch is included, but someone came by and asked if we would like anything else to drink, so we asked for two diet cokes. At the end of our lunch, the server dropped off a bill for $10: $5 per each bottle of diet coke. I guess shame on me for not asking if it was included and how much extra it would be, but it really felt like they were taking advantage of people who were too ignorant to ask. Just for comparison, I stopped at a little place on the way to La Fortuna and got two meals and two bottles of water for about the same price. I get that those are nit-picky things, but it's also a very pricey place. I probably wouldn't go back if I was ever in this part of Costa Rica again.
  • Magical place. Nicely manicured gardens. A wonderful river of hot springs with areas to explore and soak. Food at restaurant is the best in the area. The other local hot springs don't come close.
  • My husband and I spent four nights at Tabacon to celebrate our anniversary. It was a truly magical experience. From the little touches they added to help us celebrate (there was a banner attached to our suite door), to the food, to even the daily greetings they gave us, our stay was wonderful. The springs themselves are incredible as well, and the tour company affiliated with the resort was phenomenal. We will definitely visit again. Thank you, Tabacon!
  • I really had high expectations about this place, but ended up to be very disappointing. Hot springs are impressive, bathing in a river with volcanic water is a great experience (that’s the reason why they get 2 stars) but the resort itself completely spoils the experience. The place is crowded (they let in too many people), meaning you struggle to find a quiet place to relax. Changing rooms look like a public swimming pool, definitely not a 5 star hotel. Lowest point is the food (included when you buy your entrance ticket): everything is barely edible (and few things definitely inedible). If you decide to visit this place, give yourself a favour and at least skip the food.
  • I would say this place is way too overpriced. Hot springs are quite unique experience, but service and facilities are pretty ordinary. We enjoyed the restaurant though.
