Costa Rica's largest lake, Lake Arenal encompasses about 85 sq km (32 sq mi). Originally much smaller, the lake tripled in size when a huge dam was built in the 1970s. Get on the water to admire the surrounding natural scenery, green undulating hills surrounding the deep blue lake, and the Arenal Volcano in the background. A windsurfing and sailboarding haven thanks to its constant winds, the lake offers numerous recreational activities.   • We took a boat trip across the lake on our way to Monteverde. We were on a daily large boat which wasn't too noisy so didn't spoil the peaceful setting. I was quite miffed to get off at the end as I w...  more »

  • This isn't something you'd spend a lot of time at, but is worth it for a few photos and just to see it. I would recommend this as it's free and you can meet some cool vendors and see a gorgeous site. ...  more »
