Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Cano Negro
(4.5/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Meander through the remote wetlands of Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge and have the privilege of seeing many indigenous endangered species in their habitat. Popular with bird watchers, the refuge's many species are not seen anywhere else in Costa Rica. Once you've completed the long drive to the refuge, the site is only accessible from the marshes so those hoping for glimpses of wildlife and some memorable photos should book one of the boat or canoe day tours. • We are staying at the Arenal Kiaro and it took 2 hours to get to river and the boat ride was a bit short of 2 hours and the majority of the time we were looking at Trees. We saw birds, monkeys, lizard...  more »
  • Caño Negro wildlife refuge is a special place for the observation of birds and varied fauna especially the crocodiles, the fossil fish called fish gaspar is another attraction of the refuge. There are lodging facilities and where to eat. Caño Negro is a small town with much to offer.

  • My visit to Caño Negro was very nice, as I did with the canoe adventure Agency, from La Fortuna, for which the tour included land transport in a small very comfortable bus and along the Río Frío, less visited than other places inside the spout, a very good boat with electric motor, highly recommended as not away the animals. Like all destinations of nature, the species are not always guaranteed, however we were able to see at least 15 caimans, turtles, iguanas, basilisks, howler monkeys and birds as: Roseate spoonbill, ciguenones, duck, cormorants, hawks, caracaras, gualas cabecirojas, oropendolas, several species of herons (Royal, cattle egret, blue, yellow-legged gull, Tiger, green garzita), 2 species of kingfishers and flycatchers.

  • Amazing bio-diversity here. We spent a day on the river and saw things we wouldn't have dreamed of.
  • Stunning river that has an incredibly diverse fauna.
  • Very good, birds, caimans and fishing.
  • There's a lot of nature there. You better be prepared for a very humid and sometimes very hot weather
  • Amazing place
