Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano), Arenal Volcano National Park

(4.3/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Climb Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano), an inactive volcano covered in lush greenery. Believed to have erupted for the first time 38,000 years ago, the volcano last saw activity approximately 3,500 years ago--making it an entirely different proposition to its noisy neighbor, Arenal. Take one of the two routes to reach the top and see the lagoon of green water in its crater. Most regard the hikes as relatively tough for beginners, and the paths can become particularly muddy and dangerous when it rains. Use our La Fortuna de San Carlos tourist route planner to visit Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano) on your trip to La Fortuna de San Carlos, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • This attraction don't need tabs, but it takes a minimum of physical preparation. A lot of ascent and the descent of the second part, towards the natural pool is real steep and slippery. It's rewarding dive that emerald green water.
