Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano), Arenal Volcano National Park

4.2
#9 of 14 in Nature in Arenal Volcano National Park
Climb Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano), an inactive volcano covered in lush greenery. Believed to have erupted for the first time 38,000 years ago, the volcano last saw activity approximately 3,500 years ago--making it an entirely different proposition to its noisy neighbor, Arenal. Take one of the two routes to reach the top and see the lagoon of green water in its crater. Most regard the hikes as relatively tough for beginners, and the paths can become particularly muddy and dangerous when it rains. • Be careful not to get on this route being advertised on the road as the official access is closed. You will be charged $10 and not there is an official way, the water has eroded the access and is very difficult. This poorly signposted, clear is unofficial, and we did a ride that is prrdia by a river. We had run danger arising in a storm. 6 hours were leave and come back. It was not worth it. We knew then that it was dangerous to take the vines and vegetation by snakes and other poisonous insects. Beware

  • First of all, you can absolutely do it, the so-called government fences never has anything on it that say you cannot enter. And the guy in the Green Lagoon hotel told us exactly the same thing - yes y...  more »

  • Great hike. Official its closed but we spoke to some people in the receiption of the green lagoon resort (the side from which we ascended) and while they didn’t explicitly encourage it, they showed where the trail begins. Partially very steep, did it in beginning of April, would definitely not go if it had been raining recently.
  • Super fun hike. A bit on the challenging side, but very rewarding. The short descent to the lake is the hardest part, but going slow and choosing footing and holds carefully makes it achievable without injuries.
  • Giving one star so it doesn't get any more over run, but between you and me (shhhh) it's amazingly awesome, gorgeous, and totally worth the extremely strenuous 4 hour hike
  • Awesome lagoon with a pretty brutal hike in! Definitely worth it!
  • The hike was long and muddy but totally worth it !
