Anatakitaki Cave (Kopeka Cave), Atiu

5.0
#3 of 6 in Nature in Cook Islands
Explore the limestone chambers of Anatakitaki Cave (Kopeka Cave) and learn about its flighty inhabitants. Look out for stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones, but keep your eyes peeled for the tiny kipeka birds, nesting in large groups inside the caves and only emerging at night to feed on insects. Confined to a world of darkness during the day, the birds navigate with noise and continuously chatter. Remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes and clothes suitable for cool underground caverns. If you feel brave, take a swim in the cave's freshwater lake. • The guided tour to the Kopeka caves was strenuous, extreme heat and extreme humidity, the March using sharp-edged corals leads rock through a jungle-like forest. The way was cleared by the officer with a machete. The experience is unique, without experienced leadership to the cave was hardly find. The Kopekas leave the cave only to find food and stay in the air until they return to the cave. Growing very impressively, like the root system of trees through the rock like Seilzeug into the ground. Good Footwear is essential, in the caves, there are no ropes and no lights, head lamps are a must, a good flashlight in addition helpful. We marched down to the Lake, the underground is partially very slippery due to the high humidity. Since the Lake had relatively little water, the Guide recommended not to descend, because the risk of no longer coming up was too big. Thus, we renounced the bath in the Lake. The entire tour lasted about 5 hours. We are familiar Bergänger, but pretty much done after this excursion. The efforts had paid off, we would do it again.
