Anatakitaki Cave (Kopeka Cave), Atiu
Categories: Caves, Nature & Parks
Explore the limestone chambers of Anatakitaki Cave (Kopeka Cave) and learn about its flighty inhabitants. Look out for stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones, but keep your eyes peeled for the tiny kipeka birds, nesting in large groups inside the caves and only emerging at night to feed on insects. Confined to a world of darkness during the day, the birds navigate with noise and continuously chatter. Remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes and clothes suitable for cool underground caverns. If you feel brave, take a swim in the cave's freshwater lake. Put Anatakitaki Cave (Kopeka Cave) into our Atiu trip generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.
