Witness one of the most remarkable and unusual religious sites in South America at Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira. Located 200 m (656 ft) under ground, this church was carved out of rock inside a salt mine used for over a millennium. Opened in 1995, the architectural wonder attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists who come to admire the statues, reliefs, and icons made from salt. I have been to the Catederal de Sal a few times and I am always amazed at the work put in to make the entire thing. I felt like it was a little expensive for Colombia standards but it is really neat..... more »

Beautiful and unique cathedral, awe inspiring size! It is not expensive ($21 CAD), and the basic passport includes entry, audio guide in English, a movie and a virtual reality experience. They call it the first wonder of Colombia, for good reason! Bathrooms are free and inexpensive food is available for purchase inside. My friend and I had lunch for $4 :)
The trip was very simple. I didn't pay for the tour, but it was cool they had a electronic interpreter for english speakers. I paid for my tickets through Google. Although I think I paid more for my Colombian friends it was a lot simpler. As for the trip it was amazing, very gorgeous, not cold except for a few drafts of wind that I was not able to pinpoint. You don't have to be a Catholic to appreciate the time and effort it took to carve out this Cathedral. But if you are there was a mass while I was there. "Yes" the church is still being used. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. My favorite is called the Dome. Its suppose to represent the gateway to heaven. Second was just the view of the city below. And the cultural artifacts. And many more 😊😊
Absolutely visit this. It ought to be one of the wonders of the world. Incredible. If you see one thing in Colombia, let it be this. We paid 160m pesos per person for a return trip including entrance and audio guide. English audio guide is great by the way. Leave about 2 or 2.30 hours to leisurely see. Your entrance ticket gets you entrance to the VR, 3D and light shows, each about 10-15 minutes long. There are toilets inside and places to buy some refreshments towards the end.
Must go at least once if you have one day off. Great place to wander around. Great picture opportunities and best of all it's beautiful but itself. Avoid it if you're afraid of dark or closed spaces.
This place is a must see in Zipaquira! It's truly an amazing experience. When you arrive you will be given an electronic device that provides an audio guided tour in English or Spanish. I would highly recommend having a pair of earbuds on hand. After the tour is complete there are plenty of souvenirs to commemorate your experience. The immense size of the cathedral is awe inspiring, and the carvings are absolutely stunning. This trip to Colombia was wonderful and we created many memories here.
