Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Huila Department / Villavieja / Wildlife Areas / Desierto de la Tatacoa
Explore the dunes and rock formations at Desierto de la Tatacoa, a tranquil semi-arid desert away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Named after the sound a rattlesnake makes (even though there are none in the area), the desert has a large, dry, tropical ecosystem. Roam among the tall cactus plants and spot numerous wildlife species such as scorpions, turtles, eagles, and wildcats. Favorite activities here include camping, picnicking, or just enjoying the unusual landscape. Visit the observatory to view the stars and planets through a telescope, or stargaze on your own. A visit to Desierto de la Tatacoa represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Villavieja itinerary builder to plot your vacation.

I recommend take repellent, flashlight and batteries extra because they have no where to charge their cell phones or cameras, the signal is very intermittent. It is a spectacular place to see stars, and if you have luck sure will see some stars fugases. The best place is Cuzco where are the desert red, that corresponds to all the images advertising.View original

We spend approximately 1:45 are more or less 42 km. In villavieja me staying at a hotel in the town called villa paradise, which is very clean comfortable. The cost of the night was 130 thousand in a room with AC. Features include pool. We did not see the need to hire Guide did it in cart since the signs of the desert it is easy find places more important, the entrance is located the Observatory which gives lectures every night at 6:45 pm, also this area called cuzco is the red part of the desert. Ay many hiking trails, there are swimming pools, called pits, which you can enter by 5 pesos. To enter the desert colours of the Earth changes can be. also there are several estaderos and hotels most camping service for affordable prices. Is important to take good sunscreen, repellent and good liquid. The drinks inside the desert or are so cheap approx from 3000 thousand. Get transport from the village, motorcycles, taxis, motorcycle taxi and vans. 2. of return took it via to neiva which is is paved, by this route are must pay two tolls additional. Our next stop was SBAI, in where we stayed in hotel called Meyo in where the night the room with AC is of 50 thousand pesos. 3. There is a step in AIpe for villavieja but only the for pedestrians and otos since is made in a canoe crossing the river magdalena. is cost of the passage is of 3000 thousand pesos the Lord of it canoe works all those days and the travel hard two minutes of ida and some 4 minutes of return. the truth is an adventure to do this step. Additional visit the museio of villavieja which is in Park, your guide is very friendly. In summary super preferred visit the desert, ay options stop all.View original
