Las Lajas Sanctuary, Pasto
(4.7/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Admire the impressive and unusual architecture of Las Lajas Sanctuary, an atmospheric and attractive place of worship on the edge of a deep river-cut gorge. The current church was built between 1916 and 1949 in a Gothic Revivalist style, though the site has been a place of pilgrimage since the 18th century, when the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared before a local invalid during a storm. A bridge crosses the deep ravine and gives the place a magical look, while the use of local stones in the facade allows the church to blend in with the impressive nature that surrounds it. • Cathedral built between a mountain, which in 1754 an Indian who was with his daughter deaf mute was presented the Virgin girl and speaks. From there begins the construction of the Cathedral. To get there you have to take bus, taxi or bus from Ipiales and hence get transport to the lajas, have the possibility of going down the stairs or by cable car. In the Cathedral there is a museum where they explain the history, indigenous customs and indigenous elements. Photographs can be taken are divine, there are many points where to get beautiful photos by location. Not to be missed.

  • Church perfectly embedded into the environment. River, waterfall, steep slopes and the architecture of the Church make this place a spectacular site.

  • The most impressive of this church is the place they chose to build it. The facade has nice details, not miss visiting the Museum in the basement, for me is more special than the Church itself. I recommend going in the afternoon to see it during the day and after dusk with lights.

  • I like most people, I assume, visit here while crossing the border and if you are in the same situation and wondering if it's worth it than trust me it is. Once you reach the main bus terminal look for white vehicles. You can get a taxi for about 8000 while shared taxi is 2200. The journey is only about 15 minutes. From the taxi stand it's about 10 minutes down a hill. It's a really beautiful site and building. You can do it in about 90 minutes. Normally border days you want to get over with asap but this makes it a good day. Visit if you can.
  • The location, the style (although fairly recent), and the interior with the main wall being the mountain rock are amazing. Worth a visit if you happen to be around che Ecuadorian-Colombian border.
  • amazing and beautiful
  • worth visiting if you're waiting for a bus. There are shared taxis leaving from outside the bus station. Just ask for Las Lajas.
  • Amazing church
