Las Lajas Sanctuary, Pasto

Religious Site Architectural Building
Admire the impressive and unusual architecture of Las Lajas Sanctuary, an atmospheric and attractive place of worship on the edge of a deep river-cut gorge. The current church was built between 1916 and 1949 in a Gothic Revivalist style, though the site has been a place of pilgrimage since the 18th century, when the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared before a local invalid during a storm. A bridge crosses the deep ravine and gives the place a magical look, while the use of local stones in the facade allows the church to blend in with the impressive nature that surrounds it. Where to stay in Pasto

Just two hours from the border with Ecuador, Pasto represents a stop-off point for traveling business people, so you can bet on having plenty of choices when it comes to accommodations. A few older, more atmospheric hotels sit in the city's historic center, offering rooms with lots of character and various additional facilities. Simpler business-style hotels can be found farther from the center of town, usually close to the main regional highways--these are especially convenient for those wishing to explore the remoter parts of the region.
