La Laguna de la Cocha, Pasto

4.8
#2 of 16 in Things to do in Pasto
Gaze out over La Laguna de la Cocha, a large natural reservoir created by a glacier. With a surface area of 40.5 sq km (17.4 sq mi), the lake is the second largest in the country, and dominates the valley, neatly framed by the surrounding mountains and forest areas. Take a boat trip out to the largest of the lake's two islands to visit a wildlife sanctuary and see animals, including teals, ruddy ducks, moose, and rainbow trout. One of the sights most visited grass. The must-sees are the visit to the island of the corota, eat trout and take boiled. You can camp in surrounding areas to the Lake, or fish renting a boat all day.

Don't forget to make the trek to the viewpoint of the island. 20 to 30 minutes back and forth depending on the physical state.

The lagoon of Lake is located to the South of the country, in the Nariño Department. The weather is cold and rainy throughout the year so it is advisable to go equipped with jacket and waterproof boots. Once you take the boat trip to the nature sanctuary island La Carota, where in addition to a beautiful small chapel Catholic you can enjoy hiking in natural landscapes, the tour of the island takes approximately 45 minutes. In return, you will find a great range of restaurants where the main dish is always the same: the trout. The prices are really cheap compared to the rest of the country, you can have lunch from only $6000, and if the group is large don't forget to ask for discount. Also find desserts and delicious cheeses at a very comfortable price. I recommend this place as a stop in a tour that includes Tulcan, the sanctuary of Las Lajas, Popayán and Cali among other beauties of the Colombian Southwest

Where to stay in Pasto

Just two hours from the border with Ecuador, Pasto represents a stop-off point for traveling business people, so you can bet on having plenty of choices when it comes to accommodations. A few older, more atmospheric hotels sit in the city's historic center, offering rooms with lots of character and various additional facilities. Simpler business-style hotels can be found farther from the center of town, usually close to the main regional highways--these are especially convenient for those wishing to explore the remoter parts of the region.
