Plaza Botero, Medellin

4.0
In the heart of the city's old town, Plaza Botero pays tribute to the famed works of Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero. Nestled between the palace of culture and the local museum, the verdant square serves as a hub of city activity. Wander among the numerous bronze statues by Botero and you'll get a solid understanding of the artist's famed style: his trademark sculptures feature chubby figures, both human and animal, with exaggerated, balloon-like proportions. Try striking a pose of your own in front of one of the 23 popular works on display here, or grab an ice cream and park bench to watch the crowds go by. • Center is the traditional city, for a tourist is a visit recommended along with admission to the Museum of Antioquia there itself, where it is the collection of Fernando Botero, the Museum more interesting city. In the plaza (outside the Museum) are several sculptures by the artist himself, but there are several important buildings within l history of architecture in the city, the old building of the Government of Antioquia neo Gothic style arch. Agustín Goovaerts (Belgian), the building of the Museo de Antioquia work of H.M Rodriguez, Hotel Nutibara work of Paul Williams and the old building of the public companies of Medellín Miguel de Aguinaga of Augusto Gonzalez modern architecture. Tourists may feel annoyed by street vendors but is one minor annoyance.

  • A must place to visit, where you can see more than 20 sculptures of the great Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Close to the Metro station, visit early to avoid congestion by tourists.

  • A wonderful place filled worth Botero sculptures, delightful local hot foods and snacks and many street vendors of fruits, snacks, cold drinks, and souvenirs. Don't buy from the first street vendor you see...look around a bit, see what they all have and how much they are charging, then bargain with the ones that have what you like. 10-20% off is a typical negotiated price.
  • It's a great place for site seen but it's full of public vendors and people.
  • Very very busy and crowded. Hard to take pics but worth seeing the Botero statues.
  • This popular public square has about a dozen Botero sculptures. Great spot for people watching.
  • The statues are amazing and the architecture of the huge church is something to see. Didn't go into Museum (18000 pesos ) but enjoyed looking around. Many vendors trying to sell you something so be prepared. Worth it just to see happenings going on in the plaza itself. Enjoy! !
