Nevado del Ruiz, Manizales
Categories: Volcanos, Nature & Parks
Set foot on the volcano that killed more than 20,000 Colombians and buried the village of Armero at Nevado del Ruiz. The volcano, whose name translates from Spanish as "the sleeping lion," erupted in 1985, causing one of the most destructive natural disasters in human history. Nowadays you can take a guided tour to the volcano, where you'll get a sense of the catastrophe's extent, and how the land has since recovered. Bring warm clothes and take your time, as the high altitude can make hiking difficult.
