Las Lajas Sanctuary, Ipiales
(4.7/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Take in the dramatic positioning of Las Lajas Sanctuary, a Gothic Revival cathedral perched some 100 m (300 ft) above the bottom of a canyon. Constructed between 1916 and 1949, the church stands at the end of a bridge spanning the Guáitara River gorge. As the main attraction in Ipiales, the cathedral draws scores of visitors annually; it marks the site of a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1754. Take in the highly detailed facade with its many spires, then head inside to see the gold-and-white interior punctuated by soaring columns and vivid stained glass windows. Expect to exert some energy on the hike from the bus station; those of lower fitness level or mobility issues should consider taking one of the regular taxis that service the route to the church. • Ipiales is not as far from the cathedral as the map says. A very short taxi ride will bring you there. If you go in a colectivo taxi the cost is less than a dollar. I spent four hours just walking eve...  more »
  • If they go to Ipiales really have to go to the Cathedral, it is very economical to taxi or if these transport terminal and like walking also can do it. If you have time you can visit the Museum which in its catacombs, very recommended

  • It is a huge building that is worth knowing. We were passing, it is a journey that is made in a few hours so it is not essential to do night in ipiales. Once it crosses the border, it can leave luggage at the terminal (in the luggage) and from there take a few cars going to the Church of las lajas. The race cost $8000cop so if you get with whom to share is the ideal. Once you reach the church you can go inside and its surroundings. It's really beautiful! The only think as they carried out that construction already surprises. If it goes through Ipiales, is a must-see!

  • I like most people, I assume, visit here while crossing the border and if you are in the same situation and wondering if it's worth it than trust me it is. Once you reach the main bus terminal look for white vehicles. You can get a taxi for about 8000 while shared taxi is 2200. The journey is only about 15 minutes. From the taxi stand it's about 10 minutes down a hill. It's a really beautiful site and building. You can do it in about 90 minutes. Normally border days you want to get over with asap but this makes it a good day. Visit if you can.
  • The location, the style (although fairly recent), and the interior with the main wall being the mountain rock are amazing. Worth a visit if you happen to be around che Ecuadorian-Colombian border.
  • amazing and beautiful
  • worth visiting if you're waiting for a bus. There are shared taxis leaving from outside the bus station. Just ask for Las Lajas.
  • Amazing church
