Las Lajas Sanctuary, Ipiales
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Take in the dramatic positioning of Las Lajas Sanctuary, a Gothic Revival cathedral perched some 100 m (300 ft) above the bottom of a canyon. Constructed between 1916 and 1949, the church stands at the end of a bridge spanning the Guáitara River gorge. As the main attraction in Ipiales, the cathedral draws scores of visitors annually; it marks the site of a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1754. Take in the highly detailed facade with its many spires, then head inside to see the gold-and-white interior punctuated by soaring columns and vivid stained glass windows. Expect to exert some energy on the hike from the bus station; those of lower fitness level or mobility issues should consider taking one of the regular taxis that service the route to the church. If you're passing through Ipiales take the detour and go to the Santuario. The church itself is striking but the setting in a gorge over a river make it a even better sight. It cost us 10000 COP to ge... read more »

I like most people, I assume, visit here while crossing the border and if you are in the same situation and wondering if it's worth it than trust me it is. Once you reach the main bus terminal look for white vehicles. You can get a taxi for about 8000 while shared taxi is 2200. The journey is only about 15 minutes. From the taxi stand it's about 10 minutes down a hill. It's a really beautiful site and building. You can do it in about 90 minutes. Normally border days you want to get over with asap but this makes it a good day. Visit if you can.
The location, the style (although fairly recent), and the interior with the main wall being the mountain rock are amazing. Worth a visit if you happen to be around che Ecuadorian-Colombian border.
worth visiting if you're waiting for a bus. There are shared taxis leaving from outside the bus station. Just ask for Las Lajas.
Fabian ChicoA work architectural spectacular, is can take a truck shared from ipiales (trucks of service public white) to 2200 cop / person (2016) or a taxi you charged 10000 cop (2016) there there are several sites for power lunch and in general the view is quite simpatica and quiet. A required step when you're in the South of Colombia.show original
Casanova FotoA very beautiful shrine, rare and special, Gothic and modern architecture. The most important and remarkable is the faith that people have there and pilgrims visiting the place, very special and breathes nature. I recommend go well warm and in good disposition. They should improve access and be aware that they are a unique resort in the world, the people who works there is very dedicated and they must go through so committed to their region! may God bless them.show original
