Piedra Del Penol, Guatape

4.7
#1 of 16 in Nature in Antioquia Department
Hulking over Laguna de Guatape like a mammoth, Piedra Del Penol offers incredible views and a cultural experience rolled into one. The massive, free-standing rock formed millions of years ago makes such a dramatic impact on the scenery that it was worshipped as a god by the indigenous communities. Climb 200 m (656 ft) up the dizzying spiral staircase carved into the back of the rock to enjoy what some Colombians describe as "the best view in the world." Remember your visit with a souvenir, sold by the stalls on top of the rock. Put Piedra Del Penol into our Guatape road trip website and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Anyone visiting Medellin can't leave without doing this tour. It is a full day, which on average costs 79 000 COP. The buses pick up specific points or, in some cases, hotels, between 7:45 am to 8 pm to undertake the journey. First stop is made for breakfast (included) then visit el Peñol new village, where there is a church of interest, subsequently visiting the reservoir, where a 1 hour navigation is made (the landscapes are beautiful); then continue towards the Peñol stone (the ticket to climb is worth 18 thousand COP and is the only thing that is not included). They are 675 steps that one must climb to get to the top of the Peñol stone, this takes approximately 20 minutes, but less or could be more depending on the physical condition. Once above (and also during the ascent) can be spectacular views that are well worth the effort to have risen. At the top also there are several positions where you can drink or eat an ice cream to cool off. After download, you (also included) lunch and embarked to Guatape, which you visit the places of interest of the town to finally return to Medellin. He is coming back to Medellín around 6:30 pm and at the various hotels where leaves everyone, between that time and 7:30 pm, depending on the location of the hotel. Weekdays tend to have fewer people, so it is preferable to do so these days at the end of the week, if possible. It is really the main attraction tourist that has Medellin and is not to be missed.
