Torre del Reloj, Cartagena

4.2
#6 of 16 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
See one of the best-known architectural symbols of the city and the main gateway to the old town at Torre del Reloj. The 30 m (98 ft) tower--part of the city walls guarding the inner section of old houses and churches from the sea--was originally built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. A statue of Pedro de Heredia, the city's founder, dominates a square full of restaurants, shops, and street vendors. In the past, slave traders would pass under the tower; today, herds of tourists cluster on the site. Browse the market with handicrafts and old books, or, if interested, catch a horse-drawn carriage ride from here. • The clock tower is the walled city of splitter point another part of the city. Is in your surroundings who are the stalls of handicrafts, and Colombians. It is also the point of reference for you to turn your walks through the narrow streets of the walled city. Is one of the symbols of Cartagena.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
