Torre del Reloj, Cartagena

4.2
#6 of 16 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
See one of the best-known architectural symbols of the city and the main gateway to the old town at Torre del Reloj. The 30 m (98 ft) tower--part of the city walls guarding the inner section of old houses and churches from the sea--was originally built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. A statue of Pedro de Heredia, the city's founder, dominates a square full of restaurants, shops, and street vendors. In the past, slave traders would pass under the tower; today, herds of tourists cluster on the site. Browse the market with handicrafts and old books, or, if interested, catch a horse-drawn carriage ride from here. One of the entrances of the wall, access to one of the squares where bars are concentrated, and typical events of dance, music and street vendors.

Serves as a reference point for tourist agencies and also for those who travel alone. It is close to everything, but there is no appeal. Like everything else in Cartagena, there are sellers sprouting from the ground and offering everything, very carefully. I recommend not to buy anything on the street, especially because the Exchange do Street money changers are very naughty.

It is the place where workers arrive. A historical praçoa, which gives the internal air passage to the outside of the city emuralhada

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
