Torre del Reloj, Cartagena

(4.2/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
See one of the best-known architectural symbols of the city and the main gateway to the old town at Torre del Reloj. The 30 m (98 ft) tower--part of the city walls guarding the inner section of old houses and churches from the sea--was originally built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. A statue of Pedro de Heredia, the city's founder, dominates a square full of restaurants, shops, and street vendors. In the past, slave traders would pass under the tower; today, herds of tourists cluster on the site. Browse the market with handicrafts and old books, or, if interested, catch a horse-drawn carriage ride from here. • Formerly it was the only entrance to the city of Cartagena, today is as a portal. At the entrance is where customs square were traded the slaves

  • Stop, look around (but watch your steps- there are some holes or uneven walk ways) take it all in . A simple " no gracias" will keep vendors from bothering you  more »
  • More beautiful live! The gateway of an entire city walled! Worth the visit! The place seethes, has living statues, restaurants, candy and especially the architectural beauty.
