Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, Cartagena

4.3
#4 of 16 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
Dedicated to a South American human rights pioneer whose remains still rest there today, Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver exudes a sense of tranquility. Built between 1580 and 1654, the structure features an imposing stone facade, yet the interior glows with the rich colors filtered through its stained glass windows. After appreciating the architecture, you can visit the church's cloister, where San Pedro baptized thousands of slaves, as well as its museum, to get some historical perspective on the building. If you take a guided tour, make sure to clarify the price in advance, or you might end up paying extra for translation into English. • It's impressive to know the story of father Pedro Claver. A lone voice at the time the fight for human rights of the slaves, against the powers of those times. You come to the conclusion that there was really pious people, who fought for justice within the Catholic Church. It pays to know the Christian and humanitarian legacy of this priest.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
