Historic Site Educational Site
Surrounded by colorful buildings and verandas, Plaza Santo Domingo serves as a hub for the city's outdoor dining and cafe culture. Head for the square and marvel at the brightly hued homes surrounding it, or snap a picture with the delightfully chubby Botero statue in the center. Don't miss stopping in at the 16th-century church, one of the city's most famous landmarks. You can wander the square's many stalls selling local arts, crafts, and souvenirs, or grab something to eat at the numerous outdoor restaurant tables. Afterwards, kick back with a coffee or a drink and enjoy the plaza's bustling activity. Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.

  • Great place for walking at night or during the day. A famous bronze sculpture from the artist Botetourt is located here.
  • Get there early in the morning to have good photo opportunities before all the restaurants open and the street vendors come by.
