Plaza de San Diego, Cartagena

4.5
In lively and bohemian neighborhood of Cartagena's old town, Plaza de San Diego remains a lasting relic of the city's wealth, acquired at the peak of the gold, sugar, and slave trade. Surrounded by brightly painted houses with flowering balconies and narrow cobbled streets lined with bars and restaurants, the plaza is a popular place for dining out while watching the locals go about their business. During the day, browse the stalls with various goods, from local crafts and jewelry, to paintings and Cuban cigars. In the evening, local artists perform live music, adding yet another reason to stop by this area. Really nice little square. Deserves a pass. Surrounded by locals and beautiful homes. Very characteristic and in the style of Cartagena. It is also in a very refined. If you eat in this area restaurants are much more expensive European prices.

Right square in the middle of the busiest streets of Cartagena, but with a lot of people sitting on the benches, gives a bit of fear inside the square

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
