Parque del Centenario, Cartagena

3.9
#3 of 7 in Parks in Cartagena
Head to Parque del Centenario for a walk through lush, pristine park space while commemorating those who lost their lives during the revolt for independence in Colombia. Visitors also flock here to observe a variety of animal species in the wild; iguanas, birds, and monkeys (among others) all inhabit the area. Having spent much of its life unfinished due to a lack of funds, the park has undergone a recent renovation that has brought vibrancy to the place. There's plenty of canopied, shady areas here too, so bring a book. Beautiful park, well maintained and well located. Also some animals, just spend paying enough attention. There's even a sloth!

Is a traditional site, this renovated and better care than ever before, is located in all the center of cartagena and it is a must between the walled and Gethsemane, now is more secure, but there is always that caution, remains site of pimps, vague and drug addicts... still has internally a police station... it has monuments and you can spend a while, not more than 30 minutes...

As you walk through, if you see other people looking up in the trees, stop and take a look! We saw a sloth, a giant iguana, red squirrels, and little monkeys in our walk through the park. It's a pleasant way to get between the walled city and the Gethsemani neighborhood.

Not that special. Quiet and local people hang in there.

Nice to walk around and see the iguanas and squirrels that inhabit it. It should be better illuminated at night.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
