Museo del Oro Zenu, Cartagena

4.1
#1 of 12 in Museums in Cartagena
As far as gold museums in Colombia go, Museo del Oro Zenu would probably get the silver medal, but it still makes for an extremely worthwhile visit. Often labeled as a smaller version of Bogota's Museo del Oro, the museum places a strong emphasis on Colombia's indigenous Zenu culture and their use of gold in decorations and religious artifacts. The free museum also displays household items used by the Zenu people and explains how they utilized irrigation and flood-management systems to their advantage. Spend an hour wandering through the museum in air-conditioned bliss. With our world travel planner, Cartagena attractions like Museo del Oro Zenu can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Small and interesting Museum with samples of parts made by natives who have instigated the desire of the colonizers. Very delicate and beautiful.

One can regret the lack of information, not enough advanced and accurate. The Museum is unavoidable with pretty pieces (which usage is not clear). A film in french and 2 in English. Friendly. Very pretty building.

Very interesting historical info and more pre-Columbian gold art than any other museum we've been to.

Great show of precolombine most delicate artistry on gold and nice descriptive theory and history of "vueltiao" hat. Don't loose it if you are in "Centro Histórico", lots of interest places around.

Small-mid sized museum next to a city plaza. It displays and tells the story of the Spaniard's attempts to seize indigenous gold and relics while giving a good glimpse into the craftsmanship of the gold items, how climate affected the region, etc. Worth a stop. And its free and air-conditioned too.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
