Las Bovedas, Cartagena

3.4
Originally built as storerooms for ammunition, Las Bovedas now house bars, galleries, and souvenir shops. Built between 1792 and 1796, the 23 former dungeons attached to the protective city walls represent the last major construction effort of colonial times. Browse through well-stocked shops selling traditional Colombian merchandise, such as emerald jewelry, hammocks, and Indian textiles. • There's nothing to see, it seems that are part of a historic structure, but are completely reversed in the shops, which don't sell anything different than in other stores.

  • Traditional location of Emerald and craft sale. When the chivas (bus that takes tourists) touch with tourists, is one approach after another to you vonpre, other dance groups that present themselves to ask for money. Very similar with the March 25 in SP or RJ Sahara. As the tours with the tourists always happen after 1:00 pm, if you can go in the morning, find a quiet place.

  • Although the stores don't have a very good (air conditioned) it's nice to go to ensure their souvenirs.

  • Bóvedas Or vaults(23 dungeons), were built for military purposes, to store weapons, or as barracks for the Spanish military. Today these have been converted into craft stores and art galleries. While walking between the columns and stores, you will observe some women in colorful dresses and horse drawn carriages.
  • "Las Bovedas" is spanish for dungeons. They are currently shops, but they have an important historical past that almost no one talks about there. It would be nice that it be more historical and less commercial.
  • So many shops with great trinkets and better prices than other places in the city.
  • Lots of artisanal shops. My nieces loved it, and I actually bought something.
  • If you like craft shopping, head here. I loved the ancient architecture of the old dungeons and the sea views

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
