Las Bovedas, Cartagena

3.4
#7 of 30 in Sightseeing in Cartagena
Architectural Building Tourist Spot
Originally built as storerooms for ammunition, Las Bovedas now house bars, galleries, and souvenir shops. Built between 1792 and 1796, the 23 former dungeons attached to the protective city walls represent the last major construction effort of colonial times. Browse through well-stocked shops selling traditional Colombian merchandise, such as emerald jewelry, hammocks, and Indian textiles. • Wherever I go, my favorite place to visit is the market. This is small and offers no better prices than the nicer stores in the Walled City, where the quality of products is much better. Really not wo...  more »
  • OK so I did purchase all of my tourist gifts here, it's a good spot to knock it all out. But many of the shops are all the same. One of my favorite highlights is a guy who has a jeep who's turned it i...  more »
  • Las Bovedas is a fine market place with a great selection of Colombian goods that are sought after by tourists and locals (clothing, jewelry, arts & crafts, souvenirs, etc). I really liked the fact th...  more »

  • Minus 1 star because one of the bobedas, at least, should be a restaurant. Food and coffee is only available during Chivas visiting times (around 4 or 5pm) a coffee shop woumd be ideal here.
  • You have to haggle on prices, and dig through a bit of touristic knick-knack, but the shops here offer some truly artisanal goods.
  • Beautiful place, full of tourists shops. Good luck with bargaining!
  • Nice Colombian art and typical tourist stuff, pretty pricy though. Location is great.
  • It's a pretty cool setting / building. But there's nothing special about the stores inside. You can buy these souvenirs anywhere in town.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
