Iglesia de Santo Toribio, Cartagena

4.0
#10 of 16 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
Church Tourist Spot
One of Cartagena's smaller churches, Iglesia de Santo Toribio dates back to some time between the 17th and 18th centuries. Survey the intricately carved Mudejar paneling, a style of Iberian architecture, and learn about the cannonball that, during a packed service in 1741, came through a window into a hall of worshippers. Luckily there were no casualties, but--incredibly--the same cannonball remains on display inside one of the walls of the church. Don't leave without seeing this piece of history. Iglesia de Santo Toribio is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Cartagena Edition.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
