Iglesia de Santo Toribio, Cartagena

(3.9/5 based on 110 reviews on the web)
One of Cartagena's smaller churches, Iglesia de Santo Toribio dates back to some time between the 17th and 18th centuries. Survey the intricately carved Mudejar paneling, a style of Iberian architecture, and learn about the cannonball that, during a packed service in 1741, came through a window into a hall of worshippers. Luckily there were no casualties, but--incredibly--the same cannonball remains on display inside one of the walls of the church. Don't leave without seeing this piece of history. Iglesia de Santo Toribio is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Cartagena Edition.

  • It is located in one of the corners of the Plaza Fernandez de Madrid, in the old quarter San Diego, close to our hotel. Santo Toribio Church was built at the beginning of the 18th century. It was the last church in get up during the colonial era. It was chosen by the aristocracy. The temple is also a bullet that was launched by Admiral Vernon to the interior of the temple, during the mass of the April 27, 1741, day of Santo Toribio Alonso de Mogrovejo. The bullet fell in the middle of the parishioners, without causing injuries or damage, which is considered by believers as a divine Act. Therefore the bullet is conserved as memory of the mercy of God and the old name was changed to the current. Today it is well maintained and is worthy of knowing.
