Iglesia de Santo Toribio, Cartagena

4.1
One of Cartagena's smaller churches, Iglesia de Santo Toribio dates back to some time between the 17th and 18th centuries. Survey the intricately carved Mudejar paneling, a style of Iberian architecture, and learn about the cannonball that, during a packed service in 1741, came through a window into a hall of worshippers. Luckily there were no casualties, but--incredibly--the same cannonball remains on display inside one of the walls of the church. Don't leave without seeing this piece of history. • Although of small proportions, is welcoming and beautiful on the inside, with the beautiful craftsmanship of the high altar, carved in black lacquer and covered in gold leaf. Was the last church to rise during the colonial era. According to the Chronicle of Cartagena, the construction of this Church began in 1666. In the temple there is also a peculiar piece stored in a covered glass urn. Is a bullet that was thrown during the attack of Admiral Vernon inside the temple, when the mass was being celebrated on 27 April 1741, day of Saint Toribio Alonso de Mogrovejo. The bullet fell in the middle of the faithful, but caused no injuries or damage, which was considered a fact divine by believers. Therefore, the bullet is preserved as a reminder of the miracle that God did there. A temple is not very large, but cozy and pleasant to contemplate and pray.
