Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa, Cartagena

4.1
#5 of 16 in Historic Sites in Cartagena
At the highest point in Cartagena, Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa features an impressive interior, matched only by the  views stretching over the entire city. Founded in 1607 as a small wooden chapel, the convent now houses an image of the patroness of the city, La Virgen de la Candelaria. Outside stands a statue of a murdered local priest, killed for trying to spread Christianity. No public transport traverses the switchback road winding its way to the top of the hill, and walking up isn't advised for safety reasons in the extreme climate. Take a cab and try haggling for a better price. Plan your Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa visit and explore what else you can see and do in Cartagena using our Cartagena online travel planner .

  • Impressive altar with his most important Saints and the tributes of the faithful in the enclosure. Place to meditate and go in time.

  • Many pilgrimages are made in the months of February and March the festivity of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of this convent. Moreover, it is a short visit, with a good view of the city and any other explanation of tour guides

  • A historic site that should part of a visit to Cartagena . Most of the information plaques are only in Spanish -have a guide give you the tour of La Popa. View of the city is great. Book a round trip taxi to prevent a lengthy wait at the top.
  • Whether you're religious or not, this place is worth seeing just for the views of the city below. The Monastery is beautiful and well-preserved. There's a couple of vendors outside trying to sell the usual stuff but they leave you alone if you tell them, "no". Add this place to your list!
  • Nice place but need to public transport the taxi expensive different prace wanted the taxi driver and lying
  • Best views in Cartagena. Well worth the drive and the $4 admission.
  • I thought it was worth it for the view here! You get to see the city of Cartagena from a high point. Truly breathtaking. It will cost you around 10000 COP to get into the monastery area to see the view. Must come here by a tour bus, a taxi or a uber. Walking here is not advisable because one, you're going uphill, and two, to put it in perspective, it's an hour walk from the fortress.
