Specialty Museum Library
For insight into Colombian political history, head to Casa Museo Rafael Nunez--the charming mansion of the late poet, lawyer, and president. Nunez is credited with writing the words of Colombia's national anthem, and partly of the nation's constitution of 1886. One wing of his residence now serves as a museum, where you can survey some of his personal possessions and documents. For an extra glimpse into his life and times, head to the chapel opposite the house, which holds Nunez's ashes. Not all guides will have English as a spoken language; bring a phrase book along. Use our Cartagena trip itinerary planner to add Casa Museo Rafael Nunez and other attractions to your Cartagena vacation plans.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.

  • Interesting history of the area. Out side the usual area for tourists. I happen upon it why walking about. It's free and you can see what life was like without air-conditioning if you were of the moneyed class. Clean bathroom.
  • A good place to start if you want to know a little about Colombian history. It is important to chose a good guide that knows history or else you will end up just seeing a lot of old stuff that doesn't make any sense. The tour is not too long, about 45 minutes.
  • Really good steak, very happy.
  • Interesting historical site. Cartagena is not only the houses colourful historic centre. It is worth to reach this House steeped in Colombian history.

  • This was the House where lived 4 times President of Colombia Rafael Núñez, from here Núñez led the country, was the only Colombian President who led from his home and from cartagena de indias. The House is now a museum to the life of the ex - President, has all their possessions from furniture to personal items. Next to the city Amurallada
