Casa Museo Rafael Nunez, Cartagena

4.2
#8 of 12 in Museums in Cartagena
For insight into Colombian political history, head to Casa Museo Rafael Nunez--the charming mansion of the late poet, lawyer, and president. Nunez is credited with writing the words of Colombia's national anthem, and partly of the nation's constitution of 1886. One wing of his residence now serves as a museum, where you can survey some of his personal possessions and documents. For an extra glimpse into his life and times, head to the chapel opposite the house, which holds Nunez's ashes. Not all guides will have English as a spoken language; bring a phrase book along. • This museum was just amazing. You can literally see the desk where the constitution of Colombia was signed and the living quarters of Nunez and his wife. And the building itself is just amazing to see...  more »
  • The Museum preserves the memory of Rafael Nunez and your wife and is well maintained. I was struck by the good explanation on the part of a man who is at the entrance to the Museum. After knowing a little of the history of this place the visitation to the rooms is free. Oh! admission is also free;)

  • Beautiful place inside the walled city. We are very grateful for places that we visited as well. A place where we know the story of one of the Presidents of the city

  • Interesting history of the area. Out side the usual area for tourists. I happen upon it why walking about. It's free and you can see what life was like without air-conditioning if you were of the moneyed class. Clean bathroom.
  • A good place to start if you want to know a little about Colombian history. It is important to chose a good guide that knows history or else you will end up just seeing a lot of old stuff that doesn't make any sense. The tour is not too long, about 45 minutes.
  • Really good steak, very happy.
  • Very interesting!
  • Beautiful home with great historical value

Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.
