Art Museum Museum
Small and intimate, Arte Moderno Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena boasts a collection of Colombian and South American art that reflects the continent's melting pot of cultures. The museum occupies two spaces: a 17th-century colonial building with walls of red brick and mortar, and a 19th-century warehouse where the Central Bank kept bags of salt. The museum has been operating since 1979, when its collection was initiated by a grant from the Organization of American States (founded 30 years earlier in Bogota). Walk through the rustic halls and see large-scale paintings of vivid coloring, bronze heads and figures, and modern metal sculptures. Rent an audio guide to learn more about the exhibited works. Take a rest on the square in front of the museum among life-size sculptural groups depicting genre scenes. Where to stay in Cartagena

Despite its status as a major tourist hub, Cartagena offers a good choice of affordable places to stay. If you're looking to splurge, consider staying at one of the town's restored colonial-era buildings, which now house boutique hotels packed with modern amenities. Alternatively, several old monasteries in Cartagena's walled colonial district offer outstanding facilities at very high prices. Budget-conscious travelers can explore the many mid-range hotels and low-cost hostels clustered in Getsemani, an up-and-coming neighborhood and center of the backpacker scene.

  • If you are in the Plaza San Pedro Claver, do pop into this modern art museum. It is interesting to see examples of the local talent. It costs 8000COP and will only take about 20 minutes.  more »

  • Some very wonderful modern art. No ac but worth the suffering.
  • The best piece in exhibition, paradoxically, is the article by Gabriel García Márquez at the entrance of the museum!
  • Opening times are inaccurate
  • Small gallery in a beautiful old colonial building. Make sure to download the audio app to talk you round the exhibits.
  • The city of Cartagena de Indias, it deserves a good Museum, lacking commitment to private enterprise and the rulers of this beautiful city. There is no air conditioning in the Museum, its collection is small but worth enter and enjoy the masterpieces of the national artists showing there.
