Museo de Arte Colonial y Religioso La Merced, Cali
Categories: Art Museums, Museums
Dating back to 1678, Museo de Arte Colonial y Religioso La Merced stands on the site of the founding of the city of Santiago de Cali. The religious complex consists of four main parts: the main nave dedicated to the city's patron saint (Our Lady of Mercy), auxiliary chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies and the Christ Lateran, a museum of religious art, and an archeological museum. The convent--now a national monument--epitomizes colonial architecture with its white walls, unpolished stone altars and floors, and olive doors. Don't miss the wooden carving of San Pedro Nolasco in the museum of religious art. In the archeological museum look for examples of precolonial ceramics.
