(4.4/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Follow the trail of mythical El Dorado and you'll end up at Laguna de Guatavita. Legend has it that a Muisca tribal chief known as El Dorado--the Golden One--covered himself in golden dust and disappeared into the mysterious crater lake to fulfill an initiation rite. Over the centuries, the myth evolved until El Dorado came to represent a lost city allegedly hiding an abundance of treasures. While you're unlikely to find material riches on a visit to the site, you can enjoy splendid views of the circular lake and its surrounding area. • The place is amazing. Requires a certain level of physical effort to get to the end of the trail. And it was raining, which made it even more difficult. But it's worth it for history and for the view!
