Follow the trail of mythical El Dorado and you'll end up at Laguna de Guatavita. Legend has it that a Muisca tribal chief known as El Dorado--the Golden One--covered himself in golden dust and disappeared into the mysterious crater lake to fulfill an initiation rite. Over the centuries, the myth evolved until El Dorado came to represent a lost city allegedly hiding an abundance of treasures. While you're unlikely to find material riches on a visit to the site, you can enjoy splendid views of the circular lake and its surrounding area.
