Iglesia de San Francisco, Bogota

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Take a tour of the oldest preserved church in the city when you visit Iglesia de San Francisco. Originally built in the latter half of the 16th century, the cathedral was dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. Take time to admire the stunning architecture from the outside. Then move to the interior, where you'll find gold embellishments decorating the altar and its backdrop--a grand view from the pews. Statues of religious figures line the bottom of an elaborately designed ceiling within the worship room. Ask at the attraction for service times if you are interested. Use our Bogota trip itinerary builder to add Iglesia de San Francisco and other attractions to your Bogota vacation plans.

  • Built in colonial style by the friars of the order of St. Francis (the Franciscans) between 1550 and 1623. Originally, it was built with a ship and some side chapels, after the earthquake of 1785 won a second nave and the tower. Along with the churches of Veracruz (1554) and La Tercera Orden (1761-80), all on the same block, form one of the main religious and architectural ensembles of the city.

  • Beautiful old church more in the lavish style of Central America than any other we saw in Bogota. Pity the interior is quite dimly lit and photographs are not allowed.  more »
  • The altar carved dark wood no trace gold impresses. I found it very beautiful church. It is opposite the gold Museum.

  • Doesn't look like much from the outside, but please step inside. The interior is very grand with plenty of statues. Built in 1550, this Dan Franciscan church still looks great and is worth a quick visit.
  • The north entrance of the old Santa Fe city, this church is just mystic and amazing.
  • It's a rare and beautiful church.

  • San Francisco church is a church built between 1661 from 1557. Unfortunately the inside has been prohibited. Affected by earthquake in 1785, which was rebuilt after a popular tourist spot. Church of St. Lou is white and beautiful.
