Casa de Moneda - Coleccion Numismatica del Banco de la Republica, Bogota
(3.9/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
At Casa de Moneda - Coleccion Numismatica del Banco de la Republica, follow the history of local currency chronologically, from pre-Columbia days through the 20th century. Housed in a historical mint, the museum includes collections of machinery, banknotes, coins, and more. As you progress through time, you'll note a transition from the goods-exchange system of the tribes before European contact to the coin-based economy under Spanish colonial rule. Along the way, you'll also learn a lot about the nation's social, economic, and political development, both before and after its independence from Spain. Although many displays feature only Spanish text, you can enjoy much of the museum visually. • From the entrance to the exit, the visit is an educational experience. The origin of the transactions, the currency, banknotes, the process of coining coins but above all, the small sample of history of art in Colombia. Taste, sobriety, the neatness of the Museum make this place a must in the tour in the Centre of the city.

  • In a very nice building, is perfectly preserved, with beautiful garden and views of mountains. You can view the machines to manufacture coins and a gold standard of 37 kg bullet shaped. You can also visit some Catholic religious pieces known as "trusts" with emeralds. Cannot take a picture. An attraction apart are the steel doors with a 30 cm or more thick. It's easy to understand why paper money is called "weight" to the extent that the standards, were actually the weights. In an era where there was no precision in measurements. Otherwise, the Museum is free and close to others who are part of the complex.
