Bolivar plaza, Bogota

4.0
Start your tour of historical Bogota by visiting Bolivar plaza, one of the city's most iconic sights. A statue of Simon Bolivar forms the central point of the square. Erected in 1846, it represents Bogota's first public monument and commemorates the military leader who helped liberate multiple nations from Spanish rule. Historical buildings surround the plaza on all sides, including the national capitol, the house of the supreme court, the mayor's office, and the Cathedral of Bogota. Often very lively, the square makes an excellent location for people-watching, and right next to it you can find a selection of cafes and bars. Many of Bogota's top sights are just a short walk from here. • It is a beautiful place to take pictures and sit on the stairs of the Church to appreciate the life of the square. The colonial architecture of the square is beautiful, aging and majestic. The pigeons land on the square looking for food there are amount who sell so anyone can feed them, and if you're lucky and you like, sit on you so you take a photo with them. In the surroundings of the square, there is much that see, merchandise, shops, many artists painting to music, dancing. You can find good books, where take a craft beer to cool down and keep walking. Is well worth visiting the square and its surroundings. Enjoy!

  • Beautiful Colombian construction and has a grand vision of all Candelaria. Has a mystical and religious air in your surroundings. In the Christmas period was decorated and form a beautiful landscape. At this time there are corals in your surrounding Christmas to watch. There are a lot of people circling and have to be very careful about security. There are many pigeons and a lot of people circulating in this square. It is worth visiting.

  • Nice historical place surrounded by a lot of very important and cultural buildings, it has a great amount of pigeons and usually there is some kind of cultural activity. Polices are everywhere and are very kind and helpful for directions. Be careful of the sellers, they tend yo get overwhelming.
  • Historical main plaza of Bogota with historical government buildings and cathedral. After exploring the plaza, make your way into the district of La Candelaria. This is the old city with many small streets with shops, hostels/hotels, cafes and restaurants. The building colors and street art were pretty cool.
  • Historic landmark of Bogota. A great location to start your tour of the old City la Calendaria. Many museums and unique churches close by to see and visit. A must visit when in Bogota.
  • Meet Colombia and their great history from this square. It's located on center city, with many historical builds and museums. Amazing!
  • Nice historical landmark, teeming with pigeons (and hawkers who sell food if you're into feeding them). Good for photos or visiting the buildings there. It's sometimes used as a venue for protests so, if you see a group of protesters, cops or military, it's probably best to avoid it.

Where to stay in Bogota

Many visitors to Bogota stay in La Candelaria, a colonial-era neighborhood in the city center where you can find plenty of decent hostels and mingle with tourists from around the globe. Staying in this area also puts you within walking distance of the city's major museums and best nightlife options. If you prefer to sleep in a quieter area and visit this busy district during the day, consider accommodations in the northern section of the city, which includes the upscale neighborhood Zona T.
