Bolivar plaza, Bogota

4.0
#2 of 23 in Historic Sites in Bogota
Historic Site Landmark
Start your tour of historical Bogota by visiting Bolivar plaza, one of the city's most iconic sights. A statue of Simon Bolivar forms the central point of the square. Erected in 1846, it represents Bogota's first public monument and commemorates the military leader who helped liberate multiple nations from Spanish rule. Historical buildings surround the plaza on all sides, including the national capitol, the house of the supreme court, the mayor's office, and the Cathedral of Bogota. Often very lively, the square makes an excellent location for people-watching, and right next to it you can find a selection of cafes and bars. Many of Bogota's top sights are just a short walk from here. Use our Bogota vacation builder to add Bolivar plaza and other attractions to your Bogota vacation plans.

  • While here do a lot of walking and take pictures, you feel right in the center of Bogota and easily for Bars, Restaurants and Pizzerias , Churches and other points of interest.  more »
  • So sorry to say this is the saddest city center on earth ... paintball shots all over, damaging government buildings and God's house there too. Take the free city tour at lower corner-- well worth it ...  more »
  • This is part of the colonial times and def worth a visit as part of the city. The exceasive amount of pigeons may a bit annoying though.  more »

  • I enjoyed the plaza on a rainy day so it was mostly empty. Went by the next day and it was so packed with protesters it didn't have the same impact.
  • Despite the rain today, this big plaza always amazes due to the sheer size of it, the multitude of pigeons, and of course the incredibly beautiful cathedral.
  • A visit to Bogotá without a visit to Plaza de Bolívar is not a proper visit to Bogotá. It is of great historical importance, has a lovely church and in a lot of ways reminds me of Trafalgar Square - probably all the pigeons. The church is beautiful and there is nearly always something going on here. In addition, it's a very useful reference point and is close to a lot. The only thing that it's not that close to is a transmilenio stop. Just be wary that because it is so picky, your pockets might not be safe!
  • Beautiful, colonial style and historical place, if you're visiting Bogota it's a great area for visiting.
  • Great open space in Bogota surrounded by modern and older buildings including the cathedral

Where to stay in Bogota

Many visitors to Bogota stay in La Candelaria, a colonial-era neighborhood in the city center where you can find plenty of decent hostels and mingle with tourists from around the globe. Staying in this area also puts you within walking distance of the city's major museums and best nightlife options. If you prefer to sleep in a quieter area and visit this busy district during the day, consider accommodations in the northern section of the city, which includes the upscale neighborhood Zona T.
