Castillo San Fernando de Bocachica, Bocachica

3.4
#13 of 17 in Historic Sites in Cartagena District
Built on a high spot on the island of Carex, Castillo San Fernando de Bocachica served as as a defense for the Colombian army in the 18th century. Be sure to go down to the vaults: once used as prisons to hold opponents captive, they now provide an insight into life in previous centuries. While tours are given in Spanish, audio devices with headphones are available for non-Spanish speakers. Make your Bocachica itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • I'm sure it's impressive, guarding the waterway as it has for centuries, but there's not much to "see" really. If you're there anyway to catch a boat at the Bocachica pier, sure, look around.  more »
  • The only thing that sucks on this island is to visit the castillo San Fernando. Worth paying a person on site to explain the historical facts that happened there.

  • The San Fernando Castle of Bocachica, along with San José is a city of Cartagena's historic treasure, because a very important part of their history lived there. With the very successful and generous help of Hector aka Polo (whom we recommend 100%) could learn a lot about the history surrounding this Fort. People of the island are very good, humble and kind, at some point reach guys ask some money, which is sad, because they deserve a better future. To go a few speedboats are taken from the pier of La Bodeguita and Bocagrande. The journey lasts about 25 minutes and the last stop is Bocachica. The first impression surprised, because before it was a prosperous town by trade and is now somewhat abandoned by Governments, but with the arrangement of the springs and leveling between Bocachica and Cano's gold the situation will get better, for the sake of its inhabitant s. I recommend the visit because it also looks the other Cartagena, of the villager, the human need to be regarded to be taken into account for the sake of 13000 residents.
