Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina, Barranquilla

4.2
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Barranquilla
The simple and modern facade of Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina, with it's harsh angular lines, conceals a world of color that streams throughout the interior of this 1955 Catholic cathedral. The church's construction took over 27 years to complete, designed in celebration of the Colombian-Caribbean religious heritage. What goes unnoticed from the exterior are the hundreds of stained-glass windows that illuminate the vast interior. Renowned Colombian sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt created the impressive sculpture of Christ that hangs from the ceiling, above the marble grand altar. Despite the fact that in Barranquilla there isn't much to do, despite the fact that has been the city of modernism (architecturally speaking) input, the Metropolitan Cathedral Yes worth a visit. Its façade is very emblematic and you will not go unnoticed. Spacious shapes and warm colours that stand out in a city where the colorful - above all in the Carnival - has its maximum essence. Rectilinear and breadth in their spaces... is worth pausing on it... or non only for its exterior but also the interior design. Along with other 'gems' thing to visit... we will bring us a part of Barranquilla.

Built by the visit of Pope Juan Paul II to the city, it is one of the religious places emblematic of the city, totally impressive for its size which is complemented with the square of peace. Its main attraction is the Christ that houses an impressive size as herself.

Where to stay in Barranquilla

Equipped to host the largest festival in the country, Barranquilla has a good set of accommodations catering to a range of tastes, budgets, and interests. Either side of Carrera 46, find pristine chain hotels and smaller independent options with extensive amenities, such as rooftop swimming pools, modern spas, and popular restaurants. Look to the more residential areas for budget-friendly guesthouses, and consider booking a rental apartment if planning on a longer stay. Economical options cluster around Paseo Bolivar, but note the area can be rather sketchy. Be sure to reserve well in advance if planning on visiting for Mardi Gras in February.
