Museo del Oro Quimbaya, Armenia

4.6
#1 of 16 in Things to do in Armenia
View a collection of ancient artifacts at Museo del Oro Quimbaya. The museum is dedicated to the Quimbayan civilization that lived in the area 10,000 years ago. The museum documents the changes in lifestyle from a traditional hunter-gatherer society to a culture built upon foundations of agriculture and metalworking, notably gold. While all these artifacts are labelled as Quimbayan, they originate from many different times and societies. The people were regarded as the best goldsmiths in the country, and because of this you’ll be able to view ancient golden sculptures. Visit the museum to get a clear picture of how these tribes functioned (thanks to knowledgeable staff and a well-equipped museum library). Please note that a large part of the collection is housed in a separate museum in Bogota. The Museum continues to be a very good option for visitors to the city. Its facilities are optimal and should not be forgotten that it is one of the buildings created by the great architect Rogelio Salmona.

This is a small but interesting gold museum exhibiting native gold works and handicrafts and the way local Colombian natives used to live. I liked it.  more »

Very nice Finca-style hotel. I wish they didn't put music in loudspeakers, though (even if it is soft).

Great place to learn about the art of goldsmithing and in the mid-Cauca pre-Hispanic pottery, although the exhibition is small is quality. It has other services such as libraries and reading rooms.

Where to stay in Armenia

You'll find a good selection of accommodations in Armenia, fairly evenly distributed throughout the city. However, the downtown area south of Avenida de los Camellos has the lion's share, with hotels mid-range to luxurious well positioned for access to popular bars and eateries, as well as the main highways leading out into the rich natural landscape of the region. Budget options exist in the form of hotels and hostels in formerly residential blocks, fitting in with the architecture on the residential and commerical side streets.
