Western Xia Tombs, Yinchuan
(3.6/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Across the 50 sq km (19.3 sq mi) site where Western Xia Tombs lie, you'll witness the remains of an intriguing and mysterious lost civilization. Reminiscent of gigantic beehives, nine earthen mausoleums pepper the landscape (alongside 250 smaller examples), holding the remains of the imperial leaders of the Western Xia, alongside bizarre sculptures, seemingly depicting kneeling, feminine warriors. Between the 11th and 13th centuries, the empire was powerful and prosperous, but was vanquished by the Mongol armies that violently worked their way across the landscape from the north. Currently a frontier of historical research, the first mausoleum was excavated in 1972, although very little is currently understood about the people who built it. Infrequent signage comes in simple English, but the real attraction is the surreal aspect of this structures set on the desolate landscape. Consider bringing along a picnic and eating among the strange structures.
