The otherworldly Water Caves is filled with colorfully lit stalagmites and stalactites, affording visitors a refreshing and novel way to escape the heat bubbling in its central mud bath. A paved path throughout the caves allows passage deep into the mountain and makes it an easygoing adventure, accessible to most travelers. Make sure you bring along swimwear and a towel if you plan to take advantage of the mud bath--you can rinse off afterwards in the fresh water pool hot spring towards the end of the cave. The home of an established leisure resort town, Yangshuo County offers an extensive range of accommodations, both inside and outside the main urban area. In the town itself, you'll find charming guesthouses set in old wooden buildings, standard hotels, basic hostels, and a smattering of larger resorts on the outskirts. Follow the roads and the rivers out of town to find a good deal more hotels, hostels, and guesthouses scattered across the area, enjoying picturesque spots amid the karst landscape. Camping also provides a particularly interesting option for budget-conscious and outdoorsy visitors.

  • Some of the formations in the caves are borderline ruined by the lighting but are still impressive enough. The real fun is to be splashing about in the mud pool and hot spring.  more »
  • Don't do what I did and spend time doing the gold water cave tour just to get to the hot springs. Go in the back door straight to the place of intent and SOAK. My husband thinks the Chinese government...  more »
