Xi'an Mosque, Xi'an

4.3
A fusion of both Islamic and Chinese architectural elements, Xi'an Mosque represents one of the most famous Muslim sites in the country. Founded in 742 CE by traveling Arab and Persian traders, the mosque has long served as a hub of worship in the region. Wander the extensive grounds, split into four distinct courtyards, to enjoy the manicured gardens and lush surroundings. As you approach the main building, you'll find an array of calligraphy engravings and brightly-colored awning decorations in hues of red and green. Note that although the mosque features the usual minaret, its tiled rooftops recall the classical Chinese style with their signature upward-curving corners. Keep in mind that the prayer hall does not open to visitors. Use our Xi'an day trip planner to add Xi'an Mosque and other attractions to your Xi'an vacation plans.

  • Nice but no big deal. Only go if you really are left over time. Is rundown and not saying much. The region is cool! And worth the visit. Many stalls with food and souvenir cool!

  • Quite difficult to find but worth it. Not your traditional mosque, looks like a Chinese temple. All parts can be visited except the prayer hall. When we visited, a lot of building work taking place al...  more »

  • This is the oldest mosque in the Silk Route (we were informed) and you can see the Quranic verses written on the inner walls of the mosque.
  • Amazing blend of local and Arab styles. Magnificent complex. Inspiring community.
  • One of the oldest mosque in xian. Right in the middle of the pedestrian area. Old architecture provides a sense of nostalgia how long the mosque has been in the Xian area.
  • One of the most well preserved historical sites in China. Most buildings are more than a hundred years old. You can see authentic Chinese architecture and Hui culture. No smoking and few tourists in most of the most populated areas of Xian. Real enjoyed it.
  • Very good mousqe china

Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.
