Xi'an Bell Tower, Xi'an

4.1
A grand construction of wood and brick, Xi'an Bell Tower stands as the city's most iconic landmark and one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Built in 1384 during the Ming Dynasty, the tower looms 40 m (131 ft) high and sits atop a massive stone foundation. Once rung to herald the beginning and the end of the day, the tower features a pagoda-like design, complete with a triple stack of roof awnings. Note the curved edges of the roofs, which helped strengthen the building during earthquakes. You may also hear about a local legend during your visit--according to the tale, the tower serves as the anchor attached to a restless, subterranean dragon. We stayed just down the road from the Bell Tower and enjoyed the sites and food of the local areas. Best was our visit to the Terracotta warriors what a amazing site.  more »

We did not think it worth it to buy a ticket, but we admired the Bell Tower from the street. It is a beautiful building, but was crowded -- more so than the Drum Tower, which I thought was more intere...  more »

The Bell Tower is a commanding presence at a major city intersection, with a massive underground tunnel complex now connecting it to major shopping malls and plazas all around it. The building itself, albeit historical, seems to have retained little of the historical furnishing, but houses some interesting artifacts as well as free cultural performances. Top levels offer nice unblocked views of the surrounding area, but this is NOT a picturesque city...

The Bell Tower is a must see in Xi'An. The views of the city are magnificent. It is not difficult to get to. Every taxi driver knows where it is. DO NOT miss the muslim area after your visit. Delicious food and great culture. The 14 kilometer trip around the city wall is well worth the small price and about two hours to get around.

Nice place to visit when in the town area of Xi'an. Provides with a good view of the city. Souvenir coins can be bought at the vending machines for 20-30RMB. Great place for taking photos.

The tower has great views but I didn't think the overall experience was as nice as the Drum Tower. If you can only do one, I would choose the Drum Tower.

A nice tower that offers good views of the city centre. Beautifully lighted up in the evening. Very crowd on weekends and peak season.

Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.
