Muslim Quarter, Xi'an

4.3
#2 of 183 in Things to do in Xi'an
Immerse yourself in the Islamic culture located within the city center at Muslim Quarter. Inhabited by about 20,000 Muslims, the quarter covers several blocks and shelters some of the oldest and best-preserved mosques in China. Explore the dark-colored stone streets, which contain residence and business buildings modelled on the styles of Ming and Qing Dynasties. Get acquainted with the friendly descendants of first Muslim diplomatic and merchant immigrants who operate restaurants, shops, and workshops, and maintain their own traditions and customs. Also, try out local dishes sold by street vendors and check out market stalls offering authentic handicrafts and exquisite souvenirs. • Basically a big bazaar with many shops for snacks, food, trinkets, etc. Some locals even shop on the edges (less touristy streets) for groceries like lamb, vegetables, beef livers, etc. Very interesting experience, but keep an eye on your belongings.
  • Very interesting. Didn't risk sampling any food but shops were good.
  • Fun bazaar to experience the diversity of Chinese culture. Street food galore , tourists' prices but gladly pay for the fun excitement.
  • Interesting night market, lots of food and souvenir stalls
  • Wonderful experience to visit the locals and to take in the local cuisine! Try different restaurants and booths as well.

Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.
