Muslim market, Xi'an
(4.3/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Jostle your way through the crowd while enjoying the pungent aromas at Muslim market, a street packed with shops and food stalls. Paved with dark blue-grey flagstone, the 500 m (1,640 ft) long street offers local must-try specialties such as roujiamo (spicy marinated beef) and yangrou paomo (Uyghur pita bread soaked in thick lamb soup). Extending north from a landmark tower, the street marks the gastronomical hub for the area, its market serving the 20,000-plus Muslim community here. Watch craftsmen make ornamented bread or candy, which you can take as a souvenir. • Run only through the district and admire the different stands and specialties! Highly interesting and still pretty cheap!

  • The Muslim market makes it easy even fun to drive and to admire the right and left at the side of the road, these restaurants and food stalls. There's Chinese specialities of all types, and you can admire the preparations. Of course, there's also the obligatory souvenir shops. A successful contrast to the visit of the (quiet) mosque.
