Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, Xi'an

3.2
See the burial mound of the emperor who unified China over 2,000 years ago at Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, a still-unexplored part of a World Heritage Site. Included in some tours of the famous Terra Cota Museum nearby, the site offers a large tranquil park with archeological works and a small memorial marking the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. You will walk on a paved path in a large park, where you can observe some birds and see a pomegranate orchard next door. In fact, the whole area has thrived with pomegranates since ancient times. Towards the exit, you will see carved stone murals depicting the life and death of the emperor, with some information plaques in English around the site. There is a free bus from the Museum of the terracotta warriors in the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. It is a very short bus ride. Beautiful gardens.

Always wanted to go, and wasn't disappointed. Went with friends and so didn't get a tour guide, but you'll be hassled by them everywhere. Be aware that there is no easy exit. You have to walk 15 minutes through a commercialized sales area, which is actually OK if you want to get a bite, but there's nothing else in the vicinity. You can also exchange your ticket for a bus ride to the mountain park where the emperor's tomb is, and apparently a few smaller pits, but his tomb is not yet open to the public as of mid 2017.

A must visit for anyone traveling to China. This is the Chinese version of a Roman ruin, with a history to match! Excellent tour guide, ex-archeologist who dug at this very tomb. Guide also introduced jades and jade history, and subsequently lead the group to a jade shop.

Small and accessible. The Terracotta Warriors are impressive. Poorly signposted to get in there.

Forget the freelance guides. You could tour the park on your own. The history of the terra-cotta army? It's all available online and books. So just immerse yourself in the beauty of the figurines.

Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.
