Drum Tower (Gulou), Xi'an

4.0
Admire the largest drum in China in Drum Tower (Gulou), an impressive brick and wood edifice rising 34 m (112 ft) above the landscape of Xi'an. Built in 1380, the tower houses an enormous cowhide drum, beaten at every sunset to tell the time (in contrast to the sound of the bell every sunrise from the sister tower nearby). Enjoy a view of the town from the second-floor observation area, and explore a large collection of ancient percussion instruments at the drum museum inside the tower. LED-lit at night, the tower's monumental size and shape make it a landmark of the city. • I enjoyed this spot very much, not only for the lovely display of drums, but for the views of the nearby city that it offered. I also happened to be in time for one of the free, short musical performa...  more »

  • The Drum Tower of Xi'an located in the heart of Xi'an in Shaanxi province of China, along with the Bell Tower is a symbol of the city. Erected in 1380 during the early Ming Dynasty, it stands towering above the city center and offers incredible view of Xi'an. The Drum Tower got its name from the huge drum located within the building. In contrast to the Bell Tower, where bell was stricken at dawn, drum was beat at sunset to indicate the end of the day. On the Drum Tower's first floor, lies a hall which hangs many large drums. Each was decorated with intrinsic and beautiful Chinese writing, which symbolizes good fortune. The impressive arrays of drums are only on show and visitors are not allowed to touch any of them. But there is an extra drum near the front entrance where visitors can pose for pictures for a small fee. Inside the Drum Tower there is also a drum museum, where a variety of drums are on display, some of which can be dated back thousands of years. There is a drum show performed here every day. The top of the tower commands a panoramic view of the city.
  • I visited this place with my girlfriend later in the evening. It was exactly what all the books, and internet said it was. I had a great time, and I was able to see a lot of the city. I took a lot of pictures of the skyline of the city. At the time it was in shrouded by fog so the lights of the city were reflecting up into the sky. I'm not a poetic person, but the scene was surreal. I would definitely recommend it for everybody to see. It was also quite romantic, if you're into that.
  • Must see, best in evening/night. The area has Drum Tower, Bell Tower, Muslim Street, all walking distance from each other. It’s lite up at night and looks cool. Muslim Street has great street food.
  • This place is good for a 15 minute stop unless you have time to wait for the regular music concerts. Bottom floor has a museum of old drums. Top floor has a display of Qin Dynasty furnishings. Outside gives you a nice view of the bell tower.
  • One of the land marks in Xi’an, the tower itself is not so interesting, but the Muslim street behind it is quite famous

Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.
