Drum Tower (Gulou), Xi'an

4.2
#5 of 53 in Historic Sites in Xi'an
Observation Deck Historic Site
Admire the largest drum in China in Drum Tower (Gulou), an impressive brick and wood edifice rising 34 m (112 ft) above the landscape of Xi'an. Built in 1380, the tower houses an enormous cowhide drum, beaten at every sunset to tell the time (in contrast to the sound of the bell every sunrise from the sister tower nearby). Enjoy a view of the town from the second-floor observation area, and explore a large collection of ancient percussion instruments at the drum museum inside the tower. LED-lit at night, the tower's monumental size and shape make it a landmark of the city. Where to stay in Xi'an

As in most Chinese cities, the least expensive places to stay in Xi'an concentrate around the main train station. To stay in a quieter and safer area, look for rooms in or near the city center, where you can choose between mid-range hotels and affordable youth hostels catering to backpackers and other travelers on a budget. Tourists with bargaining experience can usually get deeply discounted rooms through agents working the shuttle bus station at the airport. If you'd rather avoid dealing with touts, book your accommodations ahead.

  • Very impressive when its lighted at night. If you are coming here take note of the performance timing , enjoying though its only a 10 minutes musical play.  more »
  • The Drum & Bell Tower are just 100 metres apart and are a good historical site. Apart from these towers, one can do lots of shopping in the nearby Mall & the Muslim Bazar. It's a busy area but a visit...  more »

  • It's such a prominent landmark that you HAVE to visit it, as well as the sister Bell Tower. The Drum museum was interesting, and the free drum performance was enthusiastic and energetic. Do note opening hours. The Drum Tower is right next to the famous Muslim Food Street night market for a taste of distinctive Silk Route sourced cuisine.
  • The place there is really nice the view from the top is nice. The performance was nice as well it gives you insight of how Chinese music was back then. A lot of people were there and blocked my view. It's a nice place to take pictures and the drums look well taken care of.
  • Night sceneries here are amazing. Come during the day for historic tour of the ancient city Xian and shopping. Come at night for the sceneries and nightlife. Night life around here are on everyday and are filled with nightclubs and bars. A short walk down the road and you'll see clubs everywhere. A great place to visit during both day and night
  • If you buy the Drum Tower and Bell Tower tickets together it's totally worth the visit to each. Together it's less than $9 US. The drum tower is at the end of the Muslim street (which has a lot of food and souvenirs) and there's a walkway to the Bell Tower which is at the exact center of Xian. The Drum tower is a great example of Ming Dynasty architecture and and there is a musical show at regular hours.
  • It is very near to Muslim Street. If you have reached the Drum Tower, Muslim Street is next to it.
