Daming Palace Site Park, Xi'an

#4 of 35 in Parks in Xi'an
The Daming Palace was the imperial palace complex of the Tang Dynasty, located in its capital Chang'an. It served as the royal residence of the Tang emperors for more than 220 years. Today, it is designated as a national heritage site of China. The area is located northeast of present-day Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.NameThe palace was originally known as Yong'an Palace, but was renamed to Daming Palace in 635. In 662, after renovations to the palace, it was renamed to Penglai Palace. In 670, it was named to Hanyuan Palace or Yuan Palace. Eventually, in 701, the name of the palace became Daming Palace again.HistoryThe former royal residence was the Taiji Palace, built in the previous Sui dynasty. In 632, chancellor Ma Zhou charged that the retired Emperor Gaozu was living in Da'an Palace to the west, which he considered an inhospitable place as it was built on low-lying lands of Chang'an that was plagued by dampness and heat during the summer. According to him, ever since Emperor Taizong moved to the countryside during the summers, his retired father was left behind in Chang'an to suffer in the summer heat. However, his father would always decline any invitation from Emperor Taizong to spend the summer together. Ever since the bloody palace coup of the Xuanwu Gate Incident in 626, it seemed that father and son had drifted apart to an extent that their relationship never healed.

  • In the early years, a large park of ruins was still quite shocking. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General sent a congratulatory letter from Japan gave a lot of money in the construction time. These years were rated as the world Cultural heritage, it can be said that this is the most atmospheric and the most affordable 5A World Cultural heritage Site. The entire site Park area is very large divided into toll areas and free public areas, if the tourists or did not come to the proposal must go to a fee area, weekday visitors can enjoy the history of the museum or sit too tucked in the pool of reverie, must let you have more feelings on the Tang Dynasty. Free public areas are four weeks from the core area, the area is very large from the south to the Peking University about three subway station distance, also becomes the citizen one big entertainment outing stroll to run the leisure place, here has the Long Walk road has the miniature view and the ruins which has embellished, as well as the piece of lawn embellishment tree rests the bench, Every evening it was lively but peaceful and harmonious. There's a little bit of grass on the lawn and a lot of people walking their dogs. The northernmost is the Danfeng Gate Plaza, is the Ming Palace logo is also the main venue of cultural activities, because the area wide vision, the annual festival of Strawberry Music Lantern Festival on weekdays resident of the popular drama stations are held here, sunny weather there will be kite-flying crowd. Danfeng door is not a museum can see the appearance of the site and this important gate of the historical changes. West of the public area also has a modern IMAX studios, charging tickets contains a half a clock of the Ming Palace, the rest of the film is also in the commercial screening is currently the largest IMAX screen in Shaanxi, but most of the joint ticket film is in the small hall play. The other side of the archaeological experience area children's play area and a museum, are included in the ticket. If you are a photography lover, you will love here, the angle of change will have different scenery, if you are a history lover you will love here, the vicissitudes of the thousand years, if you are a nearby citizen you will love here, the huge park provides the perfect fitness and leisure place.

  • Daming Palace Site Park - an important landmark but as a tourist destination it's not really much to see.  more »

  • It definitely a great park for local people, but not for tourists, you cannot see any ancient building but some man-make photo-taking points. I got lost there and wasted a day there as the park is too large. Despite the fake photos(those photos are recovery diagram of palace), we did meet some nice local there.
  • The maintenance of the guide equipments in the museum was not good, the monitors shows the wrong content and incorrect operation. It will be better if the administration of the museum take care of the issue more. The model of the ancient palace is elaborate, the sightseer can easily figure out the real scene in the ancient time.
  • Do not expect to see grand palaces like the Forbidden City. The site is huge, like many of the parks and scenic site in China so get the tram ride ticket with the entrance ticket. The ride around the palace ground will take about half an hour and what you will see is landscaped greenery where all the hundreds of building are supposed to be. There are a few structure and buildings that are built to give some representation. The IMAX show next to the ticketing area will provide a better understanding and visualisation of how grand the palace was during its time. There is an area in the park where they do a miniaturised of the whole palace complex which I thought is very interesting.
  • Very nice park with beautiful buildings
  • Big Park with ancient building...so amazing...
