Maiji Shan Caves, Tianshui
Categories: Historic Sites, Sacred & Religious Sites, Nature & Parks, Tourist Spots
Explore Maiji Shan Caves, a World Heritage Site carved high into the sheer cliffs of Meiji Mountain. Construction began in the late Qin dynasty (221-206 BCE), and over the years the caves have evolved along with the prevailing religious paradigms, with most work being achieved by a Buddhist community during the early fifth century. Characterized by its lofty stairways fixed into the side of the dramatic cliff, you'll be afforded spectacular views from the walkways, and have the chance to observe historic and exquisitely carved shrines and decorations. Bear in mind that there are many stairs to navigate here, and you should bring plenty of water and a hat. Those nervous with heights may want to think carefully about visiting the caves.
