Maiji Shan Caves, Tianshui

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Tianshui
Explore Maiji Shan Caves, a World Heritage Site carved high into the sheer cliffs of Meiji Mountain. Construction began in the late Qin dynasty (221-206 BCE), and over the years the caves have evolved along with the prevailing religious paradigms, with most work being achieved by a Buddhist community during the early fifth century. Characterized by its lofty stairways fixed into the side of the dramatic cliff, you'll be afforded spectacular views from the walkways, and have the chance to observe historic and exquisitely carved shrines and decorations. Bear in mind that there are many stairs to navigate here, and you should bring plenty of water and a hat. Those nervous with heights may want to think carefully about visiting the caves. • High iron and opened in July of this year, was compared to the previous jerk easily accessible. From the West down North meteoric water-South Station bus No. 60 (wheat product mountain - hermit Cliff - jodoji) out thence went (as conventional 1 hour and 40 minutes from Xian from 3 hours and a half takes 5 hours). Entrance fee is 90 Yuan. Private cart to go to the foot was return 15 Yuan. At all times due to adverse weather conditions and early in the morning, or tourists could almost watch the caves under the Charter, not only three people including me. What really is worth more than what I had seen in the nearby is covered with wire mesh, was included. Still worth a look is very much there. Privately, the Longmen Grottoes is good.

  • I saw most of the grottoes along the silk road in China - but this was the most dramatic and spectacular. Bingling was second, Magao third. Bezeklik - sad. Maiji Shan is a set of incredible sculptures...  more »
  • This is the grottoes were added to the world heritage sites as the silk road-related. China three grottoes, Mogao Caves so think that seeing is not. Bus No 34 from Tin Shui Station (5 original) in the Middle tourist stop-off is available within easy reach, so it. Good ride motorized carts go near the cave entrance is from 15 original, not attractions on the road.
