4.1/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web
Enter the ornately decorated interior of Xikai Church, the largest church in northern China. The Neo-Byzantine style church's construction began in 1913, with each brick transported here from France, and reached completion in 1916. Though it was somewhat damaged by the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, it was repaired and eventually placed on the city's cultural relics protection list in 1991. Within the church's pastel walls--among its 14 columns that support sweeping vaulted ceilings--you'll find a wealth of paintings and statues. Masses are held every morning, with special English language mass taken every Sunday at 11:30 am.
  • Worth a short visit if you are seeking a spiritual break in an otherwise busy city. We took a short detour to visit this church on our way to the Porcelain House
  • Was built on the original French concession. Each one of the bricks was shipped from France. Worth visiting.
  • Beautiful old style church and friendly to the foreigners
  • Built in 1914, a nearly 100-year-old nice-looking church. Good to have a look, the people going there to pray in Sunday is huge.
  • A must when visiting city center.
