#4 of 32 in Parks in Suzhou
Garden Nature / Park
The finest specimen of Suzhou's World Heritage-listed classical gardens, The Lion Forest Garden features lion-shaped, highly porous limestone from Lake Tai, forming a multistory rock maze up to 7 m (23 ft) in height. In addition to its famous labyrinthine grotto, the garden features a central pond, a miniature mountain of yellow stone, a small cave, and a number of paved paths. Climb to the observation area of a pavilion once favored by Emperor Qianlong, and watch as others try to find their way out of the three-level labyrinth, which spans 1,154 sq m (12,421 sq ft) with nine paths and 21 caves. Two other richly ornamented pavilions house numerous tablets and carved screens. Use our Suzhou itinerary maker to arrange your visit to The Lion Forest Garden and other attractions in Suzhou.

Where to stay in Suzhou

The range of accommodations available in Suzhou reflects the diversity of architectural styles and historical periods on display throughout the city. Crossed by countless canals, the city's most atmospheric accommodations lie close to the knotted waterways, with modest guesthouses and hotels on the lesser waterways, and more luxurious options located in the more scenic canal areas. A wealth of modern development has left the city dotted with high-rise hotels, with the tall tower blocks offering rooms with an abundance of extra facilities and views over the city.

  • While this wasn't one of my favourite gardens in Suzhou, it is worth the visit (and lower entrance fee) for the beautiful taihu stones. This garden has an abundance of these famous formations. Be care...  more »
  • This garden is small and manageable and the entrance fee is low. I loved the unusual aspect with all the rocks, something a bit different from the other gardens.  more »

  • This garden has lovely paths, corridors, pavilions and water features. It is more reasonably priced than others in the area, and the mass of rock forms give it a unique feel. I loved the way it was laid out, with every few steps leading to a different view (a basic feature of classical Chinese gardens). I think this garden would be a good one if you have kids, as they can clamber about the rock formations. Try to go early or out of season, as too many people really spoiled the experience for me personally.
  • Lion Grove Garden is another wonderful garden in Suzhou. It's very near The Humble Administrator's Garden and has a different characteristic. Both are worth to spend half a day.
  • Gorgeous Chinese garden. Monks that visited long ago said that the numerous unique rock sculptures and formations appeared as though there were lions prowling through the garden forest - hence the name. Truly beautiful.
  • A small garden with interesting formations of rocks. It's an easy walk around the garden, but I wish I would have read about the history of the place so I can relate to it more.
  • Great atmosphere. Not so crowded when in low season.
