The Lion Forest Garden, Suzhou

4.4
#3 of 32 in Parks in Suzhou
The finest specimen of Suzhou's World Heritage-listed classical gardens, The Lion Forest Garden features lion-shaped, highly porous limestone from Lake Tai, forming a multistory rock maze up to 7 m (23 ft) in height. In addition to its famous labyrinthine grotto, the garden features a central pond, a miniature mountain of yellow stone, a small cave, and a number of paved paths. Climb to the observation area of a pavilion once favored by Emperor Qianlong, and watch as others try to find their way out of the three-level labyrinth, which spans 1,154 sq m (12,421 sq ft) with nine paths and 21 caves. Two other richly ornamented pavilions house numerous tablets and carved screens. • Price is OK, Park is exciting, through tunnels, over bridges and through narrow channels about the rock formations. Unfortunately the whole win would need little more care. Water in ponds is extremely Dim, to little plants to the whole up to curl a little. Virtually all panels are only in Chinese. Buildings and exhibitions are a little unkind. Anyway, I recommend this garden to visit, because I've previously never been seen.

  • The most surprising of Suzhou gardens with its maze of rocks in one of the parties. We enter by a string of fairly classic pieces, then that's the surprise, come the basin and the labyrinth. Rather small, the garden is very balanced and opportunities always very successful, we have the illusion of a much larger space. The gardens are designed to be pleasant all year round: the autumn sun offers splendid colors through the leaves. Usual black point of Chinese museums: so, we'd like to have more information... To go with a good guide at hand.

  • I went on a weekday, so the crowd wasn't too bad. There were many rocks that are on exhibition, and good that there are both Chinese and English explanations as well. The entrance fee was I think 30RM...  more »

  • This place is fun. It has lots of rocks to climb up and down, and it also has a pond! Convenient access by bus and taxi.
  • This garden has lovely paths, corridors, pavilions and water features. It is more reasonably priced than others in the area, and the mass of rock forms give it a unique feel. I loved the way it was laid out, with every few steps leading to a different view (a basic feature of classical Chinese gardens). I think this garden would be a good one if you have kids, as they can clamber about the rock formations. Try to go early or out of season, as too many people really spoiled the experience for me personally.
  • Lion Grove Garden is another wonderful garden in Suzhou. It's very near The Humble Administrator's Garden and has a different characteristic. Both are worth to spend half a day.
  • Gorgeous Chinese garden. Monks that visited long ago said that the numerous unique rock sculptures and formations appeared as though there were lions prowling through the garden forest - hence the name. Truly beautiful.
  • A small garden with interesting formations of rocks. It's an easy walk around the garden, but I wish I would have read about the history of the place so I can relate to it more.
