The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, Suzhou

#5 of 34 in Parks in Suzhou
World heritage site · Park · Nature / Park
Included on the World Heritage List, The Classical Gardens of Suzhou showcases classical gardens once used by powerful aristocrats and businessmen. The foundations of the site were laid during the 6th century BCE, but it was during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911) that the gardens became a city hotspot. You can visit up to 69 preserved gardens and its residential sections which still maintain the classical structure, arrangement of furniture, style, and aesthetics. Notice how each layout combines Chinese philosophy with Oriental art, creating a tranquil cultural aura. The site regularly follows a monitoring plan, so routine maintenance can temporarily ban tourists from accessing certain gardens. • On the afternoon of the previous day we were picked at national airport in Shanghai and by bus to the 80 km from Suzhou. We got there hotel in the pouring rain in our Bamboo Grove. In the morning, we went walking in the nearby "garden of the fishing master". Suzhou is known as the former "Venice of the East" and is crossed by numerous canals. On the way, we came to the garden via a canal bridge. "The garden of the master of nets" (as it is also called) is the smallest facility in Suzhou with 5,000 m². You get a very nice impression about the conception of Chinese gardens of the past. After the visit of the "garden of the fishing master" we took our bus to the very impressive "garden of repose". There, the song of a Chinese singers, which was rowed across the small lake impressed us. We discovered an additional musician on our way through the large garden in an open house. At the exit, a theatre group played on a small stage. So we were given a very good impression of subtle, Chinese culture. The bonsai garden with various trees was interesting.
