The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, Suzhou

4.4
#5 of 32 in Parks in Suzhou
Nature / Park
Included on the World Heritage List, The Classical Gardens of Suzhou showcases classical gardens once used by powerful aristocrats and businessmen. The foundations of the site were laid during the 6th century BCE, but it was during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911) that the gardens became a city hotspot. You can visit up to 69 preserved gardens and its residential sections which still maintain the classical structure, arrangement of furniture, style, and aesthetics. Notice how each layout combines Chinese philosophy with Oriental art, creating a tranquil cultural aura. The site regularly follows a monitoring plan, so routine maintenance can temporarily ban tourists from accessing certain gardens. • Although Sozhou is characterized by its gardens, in addition to its channels (which they did Marco Polo called the city as 'The Venice of the East'), the humble Administrator's Garden was for my the most beautiful. Well maintained, its buildings combine perfectly with its beautiful plants and flowers. A place not to be missed. I like much more than the Tiger Hill, another of the beautiful gardens of this city.

  • I would loved to have seen the "gardens" when in full bloom but it was interesting with all of the pathways, waterways, and bridges. (Don't go in November and I'm sure it is beautiful in Full Bloom!)  more »
  • The fisherman's Garden or garden of the master of nets is the smallest and the most well-preserved of Suzhou and has this name because it was the residence of a retired Army officer who loved fishing. The funny thing in these gardens is that it has this name but I got flowers, at most a few bonsai, but there's a lot of water to form lakes, a beautiful antique furniture, many mazes and Windows situated in order to give more space to the environment. Worth knowing at least one of these gardens and I liked a lot of this in particular.

The range of accommodations available in Suzhou reflects the diversity of architectural styles and historical periods on display throughout the city. Crossed by countless canals, the city's most atmospheric accommodations lie close to the knotted waterways, with modest guesthouses and hotels on the lesser waterways, and more luxurious options located in the more scenic canal areas.
