Hanshan Temple, Suzhou
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Hear the bells from Tang poet Zhang Ji's melancholy poem, ''A Night Mooring Near Maple Bridge'' at Hanshan Temple, a Buddhist monastery. See a statue of the poet during your visit, and see the two bells currently used at the temple, both dating from around the start of the 20th century. Reputedly founded during the Tianjian era (502-519 CE), the temple has been largely rebuilt in recent years, but still retains its character, with each aspect discussed in the poem becoming a place of pilgrimage for people across the region.
Difficult to access due to road construction and quite a walk from the main tourist village - but once there such a peaceful garden and temple. It is a working temple which serves the locals.
