Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia), Shangri-La County

4.8
#1 of 173 in Parks in Yunnan
One of the deepest gorges in the world, Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) separates two ranges and ranks as a top choice for independent hikers in China. Walk a narrow, winding trail tenaciously clinging to the Haba Xue range, listening to the roar of the Jinsha River as it cuts even deeper into the steep slopes of the Yulong Xue range across the way. View awe-inspiring peaks with a height of 4,000-6,000 m (13,123-19,685 ft) from the gorge, which makes up part of a larger World Heritage Site noted for its ecological diversity. Walk across a sky bridge at its narrowest 30 m (66 ft) width. There is a well-marked high trail and a paved low road that can accommodate vehicles. Options include following a trail on horseback, hiking a smaller section, or trekking from one end to another (which takes two days). Put Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) and other Shangri-La County attractions into our Shangri-La County day trip site , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • An amazing place to experience. Definitely recommend doing the hike as it is peaceful and beautiful. Overnight, we stayed at Come Inn, which was awesome. We had a hot shower and a warm meal. The views were spectacular in the morning.
  • The single best hike in China and one of the best in the world. Go.
  • Beautiful 2 days trekking, warning if rain!

Where to stay in Shangri-La County

Most of the accommodations in Shangri-La County lie in the south of the main town. Centered around Guishan Park, the options here include budget hostels and hotels, and family-run guesthouses on atmospheric commercial streets. Look to the north of the main urban area for a selection of more upmarket establishments--some set in converted historic buildings, and others offering new-build luxury with pools, restaurants, and spas. The rural areas of scenic farmland north of town feature a couple of refined hotels with extensive views of the landscape that surrounds.
