Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia), Shangri-La County

4.5
#1 of 194 in Parks in Yunnan
One of the deepest gorges in the world, Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) separates two ranges and ranks as a top choice for independent hikers in China. Walk a narrow, winding trail tenaciously clinging to the Haba Xue range, listening to the roar of the Jinsha River as it cuts even deeper into the steep slopes of the Yulong Xue range across the way. View awe-inspiring peaks with a height of 4,000-6,000 m (13,123-19,685 ft) from the gorge, which makes up part of a larger World Heritage Site noted for its ecological diversity. Walk across a sky bridge at its narrowest 30 m (66 ft) width. There is a well-marked high trail and a paved low road that can accommodate vehicles. Options include following a trail on horseback, hiking a smaller section, or trekking from one end to another (which takes two days). Put Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) and other Shangri-La County attractions into our Shangri-La County day trip site , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This is not as scenic as I had anticipated but is still worth visiting. My guide told me that Tiger Leaping Gorge got its name from a legend of a tiger who leaped from on rock on the Lijiang County si...  more »
  • Whilst the gorge was spectacular, the rugged snow capped mountain scenery driving there was just as excellent. Lots of stairs down to view the rushing water and off course, lots of stairs up. There we...  more »
  • This place is well designed for the city slicker in patent leather shoes at one point (upper Gorge), with plenty of signage, parking and very safe viewpoints. Oh, and of course, bazillions of people. ...  more »

  • A spectacular journey. Unforgettable. Not to be missed. We did a two day hike. If you get the chance to do it, do not hesitate. You don't have to be in peak physical condition, but you have to be ready to hike about 20 miles at high altitude with pretty rudimentary accommodations. Well worth the minor hardships though!!!!
  • Strenuous in the beginning with great views and friendly family run guesthouses along the way. Hardly any traffic in late February and the weather was perfect, consider going in off-season
  • I went hiking there. I spent one and a half days hiking from Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge to Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. Though the water was not as breathtaking as I thought due to the dry season, the fun and the challenge of the hiking was not disappointing at all. Highly recommended to give it a try.
  • One of the greatest canyon in China. We arrived in motorcycle from Kuala Lumpur.
  • Amazing place. The highlight of my trip.
