Sumtsaling Monastery, Shangri-La County

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web
In the midst of a traditional Tibetan town, with prayer flags fluttering and rocks inscribed with sutras, Sumtsaling Monastery represents the biggest Buddhist monastery in its province. At the foot of Fopingshan Mountain, 3,380 m (11,090 ft) above sea level, the complex resembles an ancient castle, with a gilded roof and 108 columns characteristic of Han architecture. In the main hall, you can see frescos depicting various Buddhist legends and tales. Frescos and sculptures also adorn the cloisters of the inner halls.
