Qibao Ancient Town, Shanghai

(3.3/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Explore the streets, towns, and buildings of Qibao Ancient Town, a historical district that offers up the sights, sounds, and scents of old water townships. First built during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1126 CE), and growing into a prosperous commercial district during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, the area boasts a wealth of temples, shrines, and long-established stores, all knitted together by narrow streets and the boat-covered river. Cricket fighting holds a significant place in the local culture, with a museum dedicated to the bizarre sport and its tiny insect competitors. Put Qibao Ancient Town into our Shanghai family vacation planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • An excellent place for walking, is a neighborhood old within Shanghai. It is fun to walk its streets and there are variety of commercial premises.

  • I think this is a must do if you are visiting Shanghai. This is a metro ride away on line 10 - do that rather than taxi as the traffic is quite bad. The town itself is old and slightly downbeat lookin...  more »

  • Visiting Qibao was a real pleasure during my 2 years in China. Located on the outskirts of Shanghai this little town is thronged by tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of 'ancient' China. For me this place was charming because of the equally large number of locals who visited it for bargain shopping. If you can't find an item in the hundreds of malls and shopping streets of downtown Shanghai try your luck in Qibao before giving up your search. Explore this place for its hidden treasures, beautifully restored architecture, interesting street food and great bargains!
  • Still some old world charm left in Shanghai's Qibao Ancient Town, despite the best efforts of new world commercialism.
  • totally touristy and full of junk BUT also quite pretty and interesting. the old buildings and bridges are lovely and worth visiting if you can't get out to suzhou. the place is full of touristy junk stores, some yummy food and mediocre restaurants. also it's full of other tourists, mostly chinese.
  • It is just okay if you need to see the real old style but Dapuqiao has Tianzifung, the traditional chinese ancient style, larger and cleanliness.
  • This is the closest Ancient Water Town to the Shanghai CBD area. Due to that reason, it's always packed on the weekends so it's a good idea to go early before the kids and families arrive. It's also a little small compared to the Water Towns outside of the Shanghai boundaries but it's still absolutely stunning if you're into Chinese history and culture.
