<DIV ALIGN="justify"> 50 Moganshan Road or "M50" is a contemporary art district in Shanghai, China, that houses a thriving community of more than a hundred artists whose studios are open to the public. It is often compared with New York's SoHo and Beijing's 798 Art Zone. The art quarter has become a popular cultural attraction for local and international visitors alike, and was named among the top ten things to do in Shanghai by Time Magazine.LocationThe name refers to its actual address in Shanghai, and is often shortened to M50 or Moganshan Road. It is tucked away in an old industrial area along the Suzhou Creek. The art quarter is located in industrial and residential Putuo District, but conveniently close to downtown Jing'an District.History50 Moganshan Road was once the Chunming Slub Mill. The art scene was started in 2000 by local artist Xue Song who was initially attracted by the cheap rent of the disused industrial space. Other artists including Ding Yi, Qu Fengguo, and Wang Xingwei, soon followed. Today the quarter’s former factories and warehouses have been converted into art galleries, artists’ studios, design agencies and other visual art and cultural businesses of various sizes. The land and buildings are still owned by Shangtex, the state-owned textile group that operated the now defunct factory.Artists and galleriesM50 hosts over 120 galleries and art studios. Some of Shanghai's best known artists work here, including Zhou Tiehai, Ding Yi, Yelan, Xu Zhen and the media art collective Liu Dao. Galleries include ShanghART, EastLink Gallery, island6, Pantocrator Gallery, and Biz Art.

Few world cities can rival Shanghai in terms of room variety, services, and prices, and all types of travelers can easily find suitable options based on their preference and budget limitations. Puxi and Pudong remain probably the best options for most foreign visitors, as these areas offer both modern hotels packed with amenities and older establishments loaded with traditional charm.

  • I'd call this a must see of Shanghai if you like art. As far as I know, it's the only place where they allow graffiti and this is where you'll find the art galleries. I was very tempted to buy paintin...  more »

  • Loved this place! I'd buy almost everything if I had the budget. Lots of little cafes tucked into tiny spaces around the area, too. I'd suggest you go on a Friday, and then you can visit the Muslim Markets for some tasty food on Aomen Lu, and also visit the Jade Buddha temple, whilst you're in the vicinity.
  • Nice quarter with a lot of shops and galleries. A must go place for anyone who wants to explore Shanghai beyond the mainstream tourist attractions.
  • The graffiti art along Moganshan Rd from Changhua Rd is very interesting and thought provoking. You can tell that some of it is painted by M50 resident artists. Lots of good photo opportunities. There is major construction in progress on the block, but hopefully the graffiti walls will be preserved.
  • A ton of art galleries here. Good way to spend a rainy day.
  • Via useless ... There is absolutely nothing to see ...
